African Media Persons visit ICAR-IARI

NEW DELHI: Senior Editors and Journalists from 45 African countries visited ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi  on Wednesday on the sidelines of India-Africa Forum Summit.

Dr. T. Mohapatra, Director, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, while welcoming delegates, briefed on the major achievements of Indian agriculture and the central role of IARI in creating success stories across the country. He highlighted various recent initiatives in agricultural research, education and extension for sustainable food security and livelihood security of farmers. Dr. Mohapatra elaborated on international linkages and partnerships, especially with African countries, for capacity building of students, scientists and farmers alike. He specifically mentioned details of India-Africa Fellowship scheme under which scholarships are offered to pursue Master’s and Ph.D. programmes.

Dr. Rameshwar Singh, Project Director, ICAR-Directorate of Knowledge Management in Agriculture, made an extensive presentation on the notable achievements, current status and challenges of Indian agriculture for maintaining food security in 2050. He stressed on the research programmes for developing climate smart agriculture and drought proofing of farming system including livestock and fisheries. He elaborated on specific areas where India and African countries can partner for agricultural growth and development.

Media persons visited farms and laboratories of IARI to have a glimpse of research in frontier areas of agriculture and also appreciated hi-tech green house production of vegetables.

During interactive session, queries of media persons were addressed by respective scientists.

Senior officials of ICAR-IARI and DKMA participated in the event.
