Centre plans events to promote nutritious food grains

New Delhi: The Centre has proposed to organize various events to promote nutritious food grains in the run-up to the International Year of Millets in 2023.

At a high-level meeting chaired by Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, a plan was chalked out to celebrate the year both in India and abroad, news agency PTI has reported. It was at the insistence of India that the United Nations has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets.

Alluding to the steps taken to boost millet production, the Minister said 2018 was celebrated as the national year of millets. The enhanced focus has resulted in millet production rising to 176 lakh tonne in 2020-21 crop year (July-June) from 164 lakh tonne in 2017-18 crop year.

He informed that 96 high-yielding, disease-resistant, including 10 nutritive-cereal crops and three biofortified varieties have been released.

Minister of State for Agriculture Kailash Chaudhary, Agriculture Secretary Sanjay Agarwal, ICAR Director General Trilochan Mohapatra and other senior officials attended the meeting.
