CIFA promotes seed production of murrels

BHUBANESWAR: Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) organized a workshop on technology up-gradation project funded by National Fish Development Board (NFDB) on Saturday. NFDB has funded 74.36lakhs for this project.

The project, “Upgradation and Dissemination of Seed Production Technology of Murrel”, aims to develop captive brood-stock of striped murrel in re-circulatory system, to upscale and disseminate its seed production technology.

Dr. P. Jayasankar, Director,CIFA highlighted the commendable work done by the institute on captive breeding and seed production of murrels and hoped that the project would play a vital role in dissemination of the available technology.

Dr V. V. Sugunan, Sr. Consultant of NFDB inaugurated the workshop. He suggested that we should look beyond carps and promote commercially important indigenous species like murrels. Dr Bindu R. Pillai, HoD, Aquaculture Production and Environment Division (APED), CIFA emphasized on the importance of murrels in diversification of freshwater aquaculture.

Dr A. K. Sahu, DBT visiting Prof. for N.E. Region stressed about importance of murrel in North East region of India. Dr Rajesh Kumar, Scientist and Principal Investigator of the project presented the achievements of CIFA in murrel seed production and culture and explained the proposed objectives of the project.
