CIFT imparts skill on fish processing and value addition

COCHIN: Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), Cochin organized a three-days hands on training programme on “Fish Processing and Value Addition” during 3-5 August, 2016. The objective of the programme was to impart skill-based training to the members of various cooperatives on different aspects of fish processing technologies related to production of value added quality fish products from freshwater resources and their preservation.

The programme was attended by 10 selected fish farmers representing different Fishermen Co-operative Societies of Washim district, Maharashtra joining together to form a  Farmers’ Producers Organization (FPO) registered as Manora Fish Processing Company Ltd. under the sponsorship of NABARD, Washim, Maharashtra and technical support of KVK, Washim, Maharashtra.

The course content included hands on training on hygienic handling of fishery products, preparation of fish steaks, fillets, fish fingers, condiments-incorporated fish products, coated fish products like cutlets, fish balls, fish burgers, fingers, cured and dried products, smoked products from freshwater fishes, preparation of butterfly shrimps, PD and PUD shrimps and coating, packaging of value added products, waste utilization etc.

The participants were also oriented towards the concept of Agri-Business Incubation as well as preparation of business plan for the establishment of fish processing unit as a business venture in which discussions were held regarding the equipments needed for establishing fish processing unit highlighting the cost- benefit analysis of fish processing unit.

The training programme was co-ordinated by Dr. C.O. Mohan and Shri S. Sreejith, Scientists of Fish Processing Division of ICAR-CIFT, Cochin with the participation of Dr. K. Ashok Kumar, Head, Fish Processing Division, Dr. A.A. Zynudheen, Dr. J. Bindu and Dr. George Ninan, Principal Scientists as resource persons. Dr. R.L. Kale, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Washim facilitated the programme.
