Coconut Production may Dip in 2016-17

The country’s coconut production may decline by 6.22 per cent in the crop season 2016-17(July-June), according to the findings of a survey by state-run Coconut Development Board (CDB). The survey was conducted by CDB in the major coconut growing states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The total production of coconut stood at 20,789 million nuts in the previous year.

While Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Odisha may witness a decrease in the coconut production, the study says that there would be an increase in the output in West Bengal and Maharashtra. In Andhra Pradesh the production will fall marginally. This goes on to show that state has been able to bring the situation under control after being severely hit by cyclonic storms in 2013 and 2014.

Among the states, Gujarat will have the highest percent of decrease at 15.86 per cent and followed by Odisha which will witness a decline of 10.38 per cent in the coconut production.
