Covid 19: FM announces a relief package worth Rs 1.70 lakh crore for poor and farmers

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, has Thursday announced a relief package worth Rs 1.70 lakh crore to help poor and needy people during this Covid 19 outbreak.

“A package is ready for the poor who need immediate help like migrant workers and urban and rural poor. No one will go hungry. The package is worth Rs 1.7 lakh crore,” said Sitharaman.

The package includes a mix of food security and direct cash transfer benefits which will help poor families during the lockdown.

The government has announced to transfer the first installment under Kishan Samman Nidhi to farmers in the first week of April.

“8.69 crore farmers to be immediately benefited through direct cash transfers under Kishan Samman Nidhi. Installment of Rs2000 in the first week of April will be transferred,” said Sitharaman.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Ann Yojna (PMGKY) which is a part of the relief package, at least 80 crore poor people will be covered.

Under the scheme, an additional five kilos of rice/wheat will be given to 80 crore individuals along with one-kilo pulse per household for a period of three months.

She also announced that there will be Rs 50 lakh insurance cover for each healthcare worker for three months.
