Agriculture Ministry to promote notified crops, whether GM or Non-GM, Radha Mohan Singh
New Delhi: The agriculture ministry has no inhibitions in promoting GM mustard if it is approved by the Environment Ministry.
Recently Biotech regulator Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) had cleared GM mustard and recommended that genetically modified (GM) Mustard can be grown commercially in the country. It had submitted its recommendation to the environment ministry which is yet to take the final call.
“Whatever crops are notified, be it GM or non-GM, if scientists approve it, then our ministry’s mandate is to increase production, productivity, bring down cost of production and ensure right price to farmers” Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said, when asked if his ministry will promote GM mustard.
