Odisha farmer leader’s hunger strike enters 9th day
Bhubaneswar: Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) national convener, Akshaya Kumar is on fast for last 9 days demanding price, pension and prestige to the farmers in the state. The farmer leader alleges that the farmers in the state have been neglected in the state.
“The government had promised to consider our demand for pension or social security allowance to farmers who do not have much income. But, surprisingly the demand is not listed in the agenda for discussion in the ministerial meeting,” said Kumar.
Citing the government’s lackadaisical approach towards agriculture in the state, Kumar alleged that the farmers in the state are in distress and they do not get the right price of their produce.
If the government is really concerned for the welfare of the farmers, then it has to shift its focus to agriculture sector which has the potential to generate large scale employment in the rural areas and help increase the socio-economic condition of farmers, added Kumar.
