Parliament gives nod to NIFTEM Bill

New Delhi, July 26: The Parliament on Monday passed a legislation to upgrade the status of the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Kundli and the Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology, Thanjavur as ‘institutions of national importance’.

The passage of the National Institutes of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management Bill, 2021 by Lok Sabha will pave the way for these institutes to exercise functional autonomy and carry out research and knowledge dissemination in the field of food science and technology.

“It gives me immense happiness over the passage of the legislation in Lok Sabha. With this, NIFTEM Kundli and IIFPT Thanjavur becomes institutes of national importance,” vice chancellor of NIFTEM Dr Chindi Vasudevappa told SmartAgriPost in a congratulatory message.

The Bill was cleared by Rajya Sabha on March 16, 2021.

The institutions of national importance tag will provide far greater flexibility in the decision making process and offering innovative programme in keeping with the contemporary requirement of the food sector. They can hold examinations and grant degrees, diplomas, certificates and other academic distinctions or titles, determine and collect fees and other charges and making appointments for academic and other posts.
