PAU celebrates World Earth Day

Ludhiana: The faculty and students of the Departments of Soil Science, Agronomy, and Forestry and Natural Resources, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated World Earth Day today under ICAR NAHEP-CAAST project. The event was attended by a large number of faculty, researchers and postgraduate students. Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on April 22 and the theme for the year 2019 was “to protect and save every one of the species.” Earth Day was established by Senator Gaylord Nelson, who propounded the idea to celebrate it in 1969 upon observing the devastation, caused by huge oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, USA.

Dr O.P. Choudhary, Head, Department of Soil Science, while highlighting the importance of Earth Day, exhorted the faculty and students to grow trees. He also shed light on different ecological issues like contamination of sea, debris left over the land, environmental change, preservation of Earth’s biological communities etc.

Dr S.K. Chauhan, Head, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, said  the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 to promote natural balance and regard for life on the planet just as to support familiarity with the developing issues of air, water and soil contamination.

At the end, a pledge was also taken to keep the mother earth clean and green to conserve natural resources for future generations.
