SAC Calls for Dilution of Packing Rules for Foodgrains

New Delhi: The Standing Advisory Committee (SAC) panel on Jute has called for a dilution of the Centre’s mandatory packing rules for foodgrain by five per cent to 85 per cent in the 2017-18 procurement season.

The compulsory use of jute for packaging was 90 per cent of foodgrains in the last fiscal.

The panel, however, has ruled out any change in 20 per cent mandatory jute bag packaging in sugar.

The government’s rationale behind this dilution stems from the mills’ inability to supply jute bags the requisite quantity of bags in the last two years.

According to the representatives of the Jute industry, this year production of jute bag is adequate for smooth supply.
