Women’s contribution to fisheries sector recognized at 11th IFAF meet

Kochi: The 11th Indian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (11 IFAF) is becoming more interactive and inclusive with expert discussions on gender issues in fisheries and aquaculture. Gender role analysis and mainstreaming activities in fisheries in countries like Australia, Nigeria, Indonesia and Sri Lanka has been well documented and discussed here, which is giving new insights for development successful technology transfer models which are more inclusive.

Soft skills and hard constraints in fish processing, gender value chains, small indigenous fish species for nutritional security, dilemma of employment and climate shock, the role of women in coastal tourism, marine ornamental fish seed production etc. were the topics covered in the discussion. The success of Kerala model Self Help groups and its impact on the socio-economic upliftment of the poor women got major attention and were well appreciated by the foreign delegates.
