Anil Agarwal Urges Fertiliser Security Push, Flags Vedanta’s 1.5 MTPA Plant
New Delhi, 23 October, 2026: Amid a global shortage of sulphur, a critical raw material used in fertiliser manufacturing, Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal has called for urgent, coordinated action to strengthen India’s fertiliser security and safeguard the interests of farmers.
Emphasising the importance of securing essential agricultural inputs, Mr. Agarwal highlighted Vedanta’s plan to establish a unique fertiliser plant with a capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). In addition to fertilisers, the proposed plant is envisaged to produce sulphur at significant scale and rock phosphate, a key input that India currently imports.
Underscoring the national importance of the project, Mr. Agarwal said that India’s farmers, who have consistently contributed to the country’s self-sufficiency in food production, should not face uncertainty over the availability of fertilisers. He called for all stakeholders to work together to address the compliance, technical and other challenges that may stand in the way of the project, with a sense of urgency.
“This is a project primarily in the national interest, not commercial interest. We must complete this plant to serve our farmers and help reduce unnecessary dependence on imports,” Mr. Agarwal said.
He emphasised that strengthening domestic production of fertilisers and their critical raw materials is essential to building a more resilient agricultural ecosystem. Greater domestic availability of sulphur and rock phosphate can help address vulnerabilities arising from dependence on international supply chains and support the long-term interests of Indian agriculture.
Calling for a united effort, Mr. Agarwal urged stakeholders to resolve outstanding challenges on a war footing and work towards advancing the project in the larger interest of the nation.
For India, ensuring the availability of essential agricultural inputs is closely linked to food security, farmer welfare, and economic resilience. The proposed fertiliser plant reflects the importance of building domestic capabilities in critical inputs and reducing avoidable dependence on imports.
