22nd Foundation Day of NRC on Banana

TAMIL NADU:The ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana (ICAR-NRCB), Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu organised a “Banana Farmers’ Meet” and Agrotech exhibition on its 22nd Foundation Day on Friday.

Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR, addressing as Chief Guest, said that a series of programmes on research and extension services and value addition in banana by ICAR-NRCB had gone down well with the banana cultivators across the country. He also called the banana farmers ‘high-tech’ farmers, as they adopt all the improved production technologies including ‘Tissue Cultured’ banana cultivation, which results in profitable yield.

Earlier, Dr. Ayyappan inaugurated the Agrotech-exhibition and gave away the ‘Best Banana Farmer’ Awards to 12 progressive farmers, who adopted and promoted NRCB’s technologies and ‘Best Entrepreneurs’ Awards to two banana based entrepreneurs.

Dr. K. Alagusundaram, DDG (Agricultural Engineering), ICAR; Dr. Sreenath Dixit, Director, ATARI, Bangaluru; and Dr. M. Jawaharlal, Dean, Horticultural College & Research Institute (Women), TNAU, Tiruchirapalli were present as Guests of Honour.

Dr. B. Padmanaban, Director (Acting), ICAR-NRCB presided over the function.

Dignitaries released publications of ICAR-NRCB. About 500 banana farmers from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala participated in the event.
