Agricultural contingency preparedness meeting for Karnataka

NEW DELHI: ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA) along with Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC), GoI; University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bengaluru; and Karnataka State Department of Agriculture (KSDA)  organized contingency preparedness interface meeting with various stakeholders at GKVK Campus, UAS, Bengaluru.

The objective of the meeting was to appraise the seasonal monsoon forecast for Karnataka and to prepare the action plans based on available district contingency plans in the eventuality of deficient rainfall during kharif 2015 season based on IMD monsoon forecast.

This interface meeting was chaired by Dr Ashok MR Dalwai, IAS, Addl Secretary, DAC. He acknowledged the efforts made by CRIDA and other agricultural institutes for developing the contingency plans.  He also stressed the need for maintaining the Seed Bank and Fodder Bank for minimizing the drought impacts.

Dr. Ch Srinivasa Rao, Director, CRIDA apprised the status of monsoon as predicted by IMD for Karnataka and stressed the need for preparing action plans for minimizing the rainfall deficits in districts that are supposed to receive low rainfall.  He also informed the house regarding technologies developed by the AICRPDA Centres for managing early, mid-season and terminal droughts.

Senior officials of the Karnataka State Department of Agriculture and related Departments participated in the deliberations and also presented the action plans for respective districts related to alternate crop and cropping system. Vice Chancellors of Agricultural Universities, Directors of ICAR local Institutes, Zonal Project Directors, PCs of KVKs, representatives from seed sector, and CRIDA-Agricultural Contingency Cell (ACC) scientists also participated and provided inputs.
