Government Approves 100% Procurement of Pulses to Boost Domestic Production and Ensure Self-Sufficiency

New Delhi, April 23: In a significant move aimed at enhancing domestic pulse production and reducing dependency on imports, the Government of India has approved the procurement of Tur (Arhar), Urad, and Masur under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) equivalent to 100% of the state’s production for the procurement year 2024–25.

Reaffirming its commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in pulses, the Government also announced in the Union Budget 2025 that this 100% procurement policy will continue for the next four years, up to the 2028–29 fiscal year. The procurement will be carried out through central nodal agencies — the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF).

Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the procurement of Tur (Arhar) in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh for the Kharif 2024–25 season. A total quantity of 13.22 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) has been sanctioned under the PSS.

To support farmers further, the procurement period in Andhra Pradesh has been extended by 30 days beyond the standard 90-day window, now continuing until May 22.

Procurement at Minimum Support Price (MSP) is already underway in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana. As of April 22, a total of 3.92 LMT of Tur has been procured, directly benefiting over 2.56 lakh farmers. The process is facilitated through digital platforms — NAFED’s e-Samridhi portal and NCCF’s e-Samyukti portal — ensuring transparency and ease of access for pre-registered farmers.

This initiative underscores the Government’s strategic focus on promoting agricultural self-reliance and improving the livelihoods of pulse-growing farmers across the country.
