ICAR- CIFRI Celebrated National Fish Farmers Day, 2015

BARRACKPORE: ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) celebrated National Fish Farmers Day at Head Quarter, Barrackpore on Friday. The celebration began with floral tribute to Late Prof. Hiralal Chowdhury, the architect of ‘Blue revolution’ in India and the ‘Father of induced breeding’ technique who achieved the feat of induced breeding of a carp fish in India.

Sumanta Choudhury, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Fisheries, WB graced the occasion as Chief Guest.  Choudhury emphasized that, State Government, ICAR-CIFRI, Universities, Entrepreneurs and Fish farmers should join hand for judicious utilization of the resources for the development of Fisheries Sector. He called for more interaction between innovative farmers of the different states.

Prof. A.P Sharma, Director CIFRI said that, Prof. Hiralal Chaudhuri, who spent considerable part of his career in CIFRI, was a fish breeder par excellence and his invention is a landmark achievement in the history of fishery science in India and abroad. He also mentioned that scientists of CIFRI are striving towards developing sustainable fisheries management protocols in the country. He informed that CIFRI has organized capacity building programmes for about 450 farmers from various states of India viz. Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Jharkhad etc during, 2014-15.

More than 100 farmers, State Government Officials, past and present CIFRI scientists, scholars and staff members, participated in the event. Four fish farmers, one entrepreneur and two fish production groups representing West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh were awarded ‘Prof Hiralal Choudhury “Best Fish Farmer Award 2015” by the Institute. The awardees also shared their experiences with the scientists as well as fellow farmers.

A ‘Farmer-Scientist Interface Meet’ was also organized on the day aiming at providing solution to the problems faced by the farmers in Inland Fisheries Management.
