Skill Development Programme for Agriculture Engineers

DEHRADUN: ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation (IISWC), Dehradun organized a six day Training cum Exposure visit Programme on ‘Soil & Water Conservation Techniques’ , in which 25 Agriculture Engineers from in 14 districts of Tamil Nadu participated. The training programme was sponsored by Chief Engineer, Agriculture Engineering Department, Chennai, TamilNadu.

Dr. P.K. Mishra, Director, ICAR-IISWC educated the trainees about concept, philosophy and participatory approach of integrated watershed management. Need of convergence and integration of all policy issues was highlighted.

Dr. Lakhan Singh, Head of HRD & Social Science Division gave more attention to involve village people actively in watershed management projects. He cited few examples of participatory water resource development and maintenance by farmers themselves.

Technologies developed by IISWC and recommended for Tamil Nadu state like soil and water conservation measures for new tea plantation areas, mixed vegetative barriers for pine apple, tea plantation in terrace riser in Nilgiri hills; and agronomical management practices for higher productivity, resource use efficiency and farm income in semi-arid region were advocated and shared for further application.
